Things to consider when making a booking

Add the correct insurance

Mountain rescue insurance Please note that, once your trip is guarantee, it is mandatory to have insurance cover for mountain rescue, medical costs and repatriation. The only exceptions are the United Kingdom and Norway, where mountain rescue insurance is not required.

  • Maximum altitude You should ensure that your mountain insurance providers cover to the maximum altitude given on your trip itinerary. You will find that information in the At A Glance box on the holiday page.
  • Cross-country skiing in Norway We recommend paying particular attention to understanding if and how insurance providers categorise cross-country skiing

We reserve the right to refuse participation if you do not hold cover at the date of departure.
Trip cancellation insurance This insurance is also mandatory once your trip is guaranteed. To protect your deposit, we recommend you insure against cancellation, delays and loss/damage to baggage or equipment prior to booking.

Download our Terms and Conditions The complete details of your insurance obligations are shown in our Terms & Conditions which you can download at the foot of this page.

Insurance providers

Tracks and Trails are unable to give advice on insurance cover. The information below has been gathered from guests and is for guidance only.
It is your responsibility to confirm that the insurance you buy meets your needs and personal circumstances. If you are booking on behalf of a group then everyone listed on the booking form must also take out insurance cover.

  • Assur Sport. Sport insurance specialist in Europe, accessible all over the world. You can purchase insurance for one day or longer periods. Covers leisure, amateur competitions, families, off road/extreme sports. Accessible to European residents.
  • Austrian Alpine Club. Mountain rescue insurance is included in the annual Club membership fee.
  • Impact Multi Sports Insurance. Intended to cover resident amateur athletes. Covers a wide range of sporting and mountain activities (including cross country skiing). Includes repatriation assistance 24 hrs per day, and a guarantee of search and rescue costs including helicopter up to 30,000 euros, and without altitude limit.
Check passport and visa requirements

Passport We recommend that you have more than 6 months remaining on your passport at the date your trip is due to finish. This is a requirement of some countries we visit and it also allows for unforeseen delays.
Visa You should check whether your destination requires an entry visa. If it does you will need at least one free page in your passport.

Health and fitness

Fit to participate

Do you expect to be physically fit enough to fully participate in the holiday you have chosen at the date of departure?
If you have an illness or injury that cause you any doubt, we recommend checking with your doctor prior to booking.

Global Health Insurance Card

UK residents travelling to the EU should obtain a free Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). It is not a substitute for medical travel insurance but proves your elegibility to state healthcare in some European destinations.

European Health Insurance Card

UK residents travelling to Europe with an existing European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) should note the date of expiry and replace it with GHIC if necessary.
